Choosing Your Alaska Adventure Provider
You can easily travel independently in Southwest Alaska by flying to a hub community and then taking guided or independent day and overnight trips. Alternatively, you can also book your trip with a lodge, outfitter or guide. We encourage you to contact personally your tour operator or provider and make sure you are dealing with a reputable, safe company. As potential guests, we want you to have the information you need to select a trip that is appropriate for you. We suggest a few guidelines for selecting your provider.

  • Ask any question until you feel comfortable!
  • Buy travel insurance
  • Get names and contact information, and references.

Scheduling Your Trip
Southwest Alaska is a vast, beautiful and dynamic place. Almost all travel is by air and/or water, and changing weather can change schedules. We recommend planning a day or two extra before or after your trip, if you can. This way, you can experience the adventure of traveling without the stress.

Packing
Like all Alaska, weather and terrain varies tremendously across Southwest Alaska. During the summer, temperatures in the interior can rise into the 80's, while snow can fall at higher elevations. Almost any part of Southwest Alaska can be cool, wet and breezy, particularly along the coast. We recommend packing these essentials and some extras!

  • Hardy rain gear
  • Good shoes, for walking or hiking!
  • Layered, warm clothes - and ones that dry easily (synthetic materials are much better than cotton for extended trips in the outdoors)
  • Small day packs to carry water, camera, sunscreen, etc.
  • Extra film!
  • Your enthusiasm and excitement to learn about Southwest Alaska!
